Outdoor bowls this summer
THE last number of years has seen a big rise in the number of people taking up the sport of bowling.
It has also resulted in new clubs being established throughout the county and more competitions are being played.
Another aspect is the current development of outdoor bowls in Sligo town and plans are in place for an open day at a date to be announced.
Maureen Meehan, who is a member of the Sligo bowls club, which is known as SARA, said it’s a busy time of the year for them.
An aspect they are developing is the outdoor bowls ahead of the summer months.
They are using the facility at Cleveragh for this with sessions every week.
Maureen said: “We are trying hard to get the outdoor bowls up and running at the moment.
“We are hoping to have an open day - maybe sometime in June - but that is all depending.”
The Easter competitions brought the indoor SARA bowling to a close.
“New to our club was the introduction of pairs and triples competitions.
“The competition was a great success and enjoyed thoroughly by all participating players.
“It is hoped to continue with similar competitions throughout the year as well as participating in the leagues with Ballymote, Bunninadden and Boyle, who are new to the competition this year.”
For now, focus is on the outdoor bowls. Maureen explained: “Meanwhile the outdoor bowls is continuing in the Cleveragh sports grounds every Saturday morning from 10.30 am to 12.
“New adult members are welcome. Bowling equipment provided and coaching is also given to people, all you need to bring is flat soled shoes. There is also free admission for a limited period.”
She said many people who reach their middle years and have been actively involved in sports like Soccer, Gaelic, Tennis or Hockey to name a few, come to realise that they are no longer physically able to continue at the high level that they were used to. They still want to enjoy the competitiveness of sport.
“Bowls is the answer - it is not physically challenging but it is competitive, and is enjoyable. “How many have heard of people who have retired, have no hobbies or other interests and just sit at home in front of the TV.
“People who have joined a bowls club have the advantage, as they now not only have a hobby to enjoy, but they have a social life that brings them in contact with many new friends. “Why not come along and give it a try?,” Maureen asked.
