Released on bail on car charge

A 30- year- old mother of three charged with unlawfully taking a car at Wine Street Car Park last week without the consent of the owner was released on bail when she appeared at Sligo District Court on Thursday last.

Before the court was Gillian Byrne of Coolmore Park, Jobstown, Tallaght, Dublin 24 who was charged with offence allegedly committed on May 8th last.

The defendant had appeared in court in custody having been remanded from the previous Monday.

Inspector Paul Kilcoyne told the court it was alleged that an elderly male and his partner were parked at the car park when they were approached by the defendant and a co- accused.

It would be alleged the couple were threatened and physically assaulted before being removed from the car.

The defendant sat in the passenger seat and the car was driven off in the direction of Dublin.

It was subsequent­ly pursued by Gardaí was far as Carrick- On- Shannon where was a device was deployed to stop the vehicle, said the Inspector, who added there may be more charges coming.

Mr Gerard McGovern, solicitor ( defending) pleaded that the mother of three had no previous conviction­s and had never been in prison before.

Legal aid was granted to Mr McGovern. The court was told the defendant and her male co- accused were given a lift to Sligo by her children’s grandfathe­r.

It was their intention to get the train back to Dublin, the defendant said.

Judge Kevin Kilrane released the defendant on her own bail of € 300 to appear again at Sligo District Court on in two weeks.

As part of her bail conditions the defendant was told to stay out of Sligo and Leitrim except for court business.

The court was told that her co- accused had appeared at a sitting of Harristown District Court on Friday last.
