Chairman appeals for support of draw

- BY JESSICA FARRY

SLIGO Rovers are appealing to fans to support the club’s annual draw, their biggest fundraiser ever year.

The annual draw is a vital fundraiser for the club, last year raising € 55,000 for the club.

Rovers Chairman Martin Heraghty says it is crucial the draw is well supported, in order to give manager Gerard Lyttle funds with which to build his squad during the July transfer window.

“We raised € 55,000 last year. We’d like to exceed that. It’s a vital part of our fundraising, and it’s even more important this year because this is a defining season for Sligo Rovers. With three teams getting relegated and four European spots up for grabs, we would like to be in a position to enable Gerard Lyttle to build his squad,” he told The Sligo Champion.

Mr. Heraghty has appealed to fans of the Bit o’Red to support the draw more than ever, so that the club can eventually move away from the danger zone.

“The draw comes at a good time of year because the transfer window will be opening and it’s just after the mid- season break. We’re looking to strengthen the squad. There is a renewed energy about the place since Gerard has arrived and we’ll be writing to the supporters and asking them to make a special effort this year. They are always very good at supporting the draw but this year more than ever we need support.”

Rovers are facing a challenging few months as they aim to secure safety from relegation, and the Chairman wants fans to show their support both vocally and financially in the coming months.

“Right from the very start this season we planned and expected that we could build on what we achieved last year. We didn’t get the start to the season we had expected and we had to make a managerial change to respond to that.

“We want to see Rovers fly up the table and out of the relegation zone and away from any danger. We want to be able to provide a platform to European football eventually. We want to focus on the challenge ahead, and that challenge is getting out of relegation danger. We need support of people both vocally and financially. We have a few very critical games coming up and we’d like to see as many as possible coming out to support us.”
