Wait goes on for news on post office

CAMPAIGNERS for Ballygawley Post Office say they are remaining positive for the service’s future as they wait for news about whether or not it will remain open.

The ‘ Campaign to save Ballygawley Post Office’ has been ongoing since late 2016, when the postmaster sadly passed away.

Chairman of the group, Thomas Walsh, says they have to stay positive as they wait for news.

Back in March, it was understood there would be an answer by May or June.

But as June draws to a close, the group are still no closer to knowing if they will get to keep their post office.

It’s now believed it could be August before An Post make a decision.

“We have to be positive until we hear the results of the review of An Post which is currently underway,” Mr. Walsh told The Sligo Champion.

“It’s frustrating alright waiting to hear but there’s nothing we can do. The temporary contract is still in place so we really just have to wait and see,” he added.

The independent report will propose a number of recommendations for An Post to improve the viability of the company.

Thomas wrote to An Post last week about the issue, and will keep up the campaign until they know where they stand.

“With a new Minister for Rural Affairs I will lobby him, that’s Minister Michael Ring and I have written to Denis Naughten and Mr. Redmond of An Post so now we just have to wait and see,” he added.

An Post is expected to close a number of post offices around the country, but it remains to be seen exactly which ones will remain open.
