SWIM SERIES IS A HIT
THE final round of the Metalman Swim Series took place on Saturday at Rosses Point beach with a record 280 swimmers taking part. Conditions were even more challenging than round two with swimmers contending with very choppy conditions while spectators enjoyed the sun. In the men’s sprint race Antrim’s Eamon McGinn narrowly edged out Shane O’Doherty to win, with Stephen Burns taking third place. Donegal’s Lisa Anderson was once again untouchable in the ladies sprint edging out Deirdre Ryan into second with Marie Keane just behind in third. In the distance race, Strandhill’s Neil Walton made it three from three despite the very close attention of Eamon Murphy in second with John Walsh taking third place. Elaine Lally was the clear winner in the ladies category with Karen Crawford in second and Eilish O’Brien rounding off the top three. In the skins race, swimmers took to the water without wetsuits for one lap of the course. Donegal swimmer and previous winner Matt McGarrigle took first place with a commanding swim. Local lifeguard Evan Kelly took second with Shane Sills in third. Jennifer Murrin had a great swim to win the ladies with visiting Spaniard Francina Mora Cerda in second and Tasmin Cavaliero in third. Presentations and food was enjoyed in Harry’s Bar afterwards where the Johnson and Johnson Cup was awarded to Francina Mora Cerda and joint winners of the Sligo Credit Union Brennan Currie Memorial Cup were Neil Walton, Lisa Anderson, Eamon McGinn and Elaine Lally. Organisers thank all the marshals, Sligo Kayak Club and Sligo Civil Defence lifeboat and ambulance. Results on www.metalmanswimseries.com.
