ST MARY’S
OUR Senior Men contested the Kiernan Cup semi-final against Tourlestrane on Saturday and had to travel South without a number of players involved in the County play off against Meath. In a low scoring match, we battled throughout and were unlucky when the final whistle blew to be on the wrong side of a 0-11 to 1-06 score. Later in the day our County team put up an impressive performance when edged by Meath by 2 points. Well done to all involved and unfortunately sometimes results do not reflect the underlying performance. THE U14 girls defeated a gallant Eastern Harps team in the A league semi-final when visiting Keash last Wednesday. On a wet evening, our girls took the honours in extremely difficult conditions and now look forward to a final against Calry this Wednesday in Markievicz Park. Come out and support the team in what promises to be a great match.
THE U10 boys enjoyed a good evening recently in Kent Park against two very good sides from St Molaise Gaels and Drumcliffe Rosses Point. In the first Match against St Molaise there was never more than a score between the teams and gritty defending from James Mackay and Cameron McDaniel at the back kept a very strong attack at bay. The second game against Drumcliffe RossesPoint saw superb performance from Ronan O’Neill in the midfield driving forward at every opportunity whilst dominating the midfield battles. Jack Noonehad a good game and backed up the eager running of Cathal Kelly in the forwards. All players are looking forward to the trip to Four Masters in Donegal for their annual Competition next Saturday.
IT was business as usual for the U12 boys when they hosted and were victorious over Tubbercurry-Cloonacool in division 1 and 3 league matches. The boys did not have it all their own way in either match and had to keep working throughout to avoid our visitors getting a hold of each game. They have a little wait until their next league matches against Owenmore Gaels in Connolly Park on July 11th. The league decider is coming this Saturday for our U14 boys when they travel to Markievicz to contest the Division 1 league final against Ballymote. All support is welcome and the throw-in is scheduled for 8pm. IN many ways the performance of the week goes to the boys U16 team who excelled when beating Enniscrone/Kilglass by a single point in an away league match last Monday. This team has great potential, but many promising starts have ended with disappointment. Character got them over the line last Monday, and everyone can be delighted that their hard work since the start of the season is beginning to get the desired result. The final scoreline was Enniscrone 3-13 to St Marys 4-09. Their reward is an away semi-final against Castleconnor this Tuesday. Unfortunately it was disappointment for our Minor team when they took on an in-form Coolaney-Mullinabreena team and were unable to loosen their opponents grip on the game, losing the match by1-05 to 0-21.
COLLOONEY HANDBALL
UNDERAGE coaching in Collooney this Saturday at 11am ,all welcome. Bingo next Thursday at 9 p.m , the jackpot is €4,450 in 42 numbers , please come early. County board meeting in Collooney on 18-07-2017 at 8. p.m.Well done to all the Sligo players who played in the National Wall-Ball Championships in Breaffy last weekend. There were handballers from all 4 Sligo clubs and everybody enjoyed watching and being involved in the exciting action. The 60 x 30 ladder continues this week details available on Fastcourts.
DRUMCLIFFE/ROSSES POINT
THREE of our club footballers celebrated Connacht title success with Sligo ladies in Castlebar last Sunday. Rachel Monaghan, Sinéad Regan and Michelle McNamara were part of the Sligo ladies squad which lifted the Connacht Intermediate football title for 2017 thanks to a 3-15 to 2-13 success over Leitrim at MacHale Park. Another club member - Aisling Power - is also part of Paddy Henry’s management team. That’s two-in-a-row for Sligo ladies. Congrats to all involved. There was disappointment for Aisling’s brother Neil in Navan on Saturday evening as Sligo bowed out of this year’s All-Ireland senior football championship after. A narrow defeat to Meath in the qualifiers. Good luck to the Sligo minor team who take on Galway in the Connacht minor final this Sunday in Salthill at 12pm. Our boys minor footballers completed their Division 3 league campaign with a spirited 3-12 to 3-12 draw against St John’s at Oxfield last Friday. The team will be amalgamating with Calry/St Joseph’s for the Championship. We have entered a team into this year’s U21 B football championship. It will be managed by our senior boss Fergal O’Flaherty. Our boys U16 footballers play Owenmore Gaels in their league semi-final on Monday evening in Oxfield at 7pm. A little piece of history will be made this Thursday evening when the first ever Benbulben Gaels U18 team contests the Sligo minor club hurling championship. The team will travel to Tourlestrane to play Tourlestrane/Curry at 7 o’clock. This marks an important milestone in the development of club hurling and we wish all the players and management involved the best of luck. There are six clubs contesting the Sligo minor hurling championship for 2017 and the competition is played on a round-robin basis. It’s been a hectic seven days for our U14 hurlers. They lifted the league title at Markievicz Park last Thursday evening with a comprehensive win over Naomh Eoin in the final. The following day, a depleted Benbulben Gaels squad travelled to Bekan to take part in a very enjoyable Connacht GAA Club hurling U14 Féile, which saw 12 teams from across the Province (including a visiting New York team) participating. The lads won one group game (against Glencar/Manorhamilton)
