ST MICHAEL’S
THE Intermediate team played St John’s on Saturday evening in the league. St John’s ran out the stronger on the evening. Next week we play Castleconnor away on Sunday. Training continues as usual and all players are asked to attend. The Cúl Camps took place last week and were very well attended by the local children. All had a great time and the club wish to thank Liam Óg Gormley, Brian Taaffe, the County Board, and all the coaches for their time and effort to make it a very successful event. Also thank you to all who attended. The Under 18’s amalgamation of St Michaels and Geevagh play in the Division 2 Shield final takes place on Thursday evening at 6.30pm in Scarden. Please come out and support the lads.
NAOMH EOIN
OUR U10s competed in a threeteam hurling blitz in Easkey on Wednesday, recording one win and one loss. Patrick Brady and Roughan O’Neill were our chief scorers. Conor Murray and Liam Hargadon impressed. The next U10 hurling blitz is scheduled for Wednesday 26th July. In the first round of the U14 hurling championship, we were defeated by Castleconnor 6-4 to 4-3 in a windy St Brendan’s Park on Friday. As we have a bye in Round 2, our next U14 game will be the Round 3 fixture versus Tourlestrane on 11th August. Our Minor Hurlers were edged out by Tubbercurry on Wednesday evening in the first Round of the MHC at Kent Park. Hard luck also to our youthful senior hurling team who were narrowly beaten by reigning county champions Calry/St Joseph’s 2-16 to 2-12 in the SHC after an eventful and exciting game. We were left to rue a number of wides in the first half and despite being on top for much of the half we were 1-7 to 1-6 down at half-time with Niall Feehily getting the goal for our senior team on his championship debut. Best wishes to our five players, Cathal Jordan, Gerard and Tony O’Kelly-Lynch, Paul Kilcoyne and Niall Feehily on the county U21 team panel who contest the All Ireland Final v Donegal in Markievicz Park on Saturday at 4pm (note change of time). Please support our players and this well-prepared team with Declan Loughnane and our own Michael Burke having put in excellent work.
CALRY/ST JOSEPH’S
THE senior football team played away to Tourlestrane in the Div I Senior football League on Sun 16th July. The game started at a hectic pace and our team had a goal on the scoreboard through D Cummins in the first few minutes, and then the opposition launched a blistering attack with the ball ending up in the our net leaving the score one goal each. The game ebbed and flowed for the next few minutes, and then Tourlestrane’s superior fitness levels and teamwork began to influence the game and they finished ahead at the final whistle on a score of Tourlestrane 1—18 to Clary St Josephs 1—6. Team on duty:- A Devaney, B Shannon, A Cummins, M Fowley, C Heraghty, E Nicholson, C Mc Govern, D O Boyle, B O Boyle , M Flynn, D Cummins, B Mc Govern , A Flynn, C Griffin, P Heraghty, Subs G Keaney , C Devaney. Training continues on Tues and Thurs at 7.30pm.
OWENMORE GAELS
THE Minor Boys had a busy week when they played Shamrock Gaels last Monday in their final league game. In what was a very high standard the lads dug out a one point win to secure their place in what looks like a wide open A Championship. On Thursday evening, they then faced Easkey/ Enniscrone/Kilglass in the A shield semi-final. After their game on Monday tired legs played their part but the lads still dug out the win which sets them up for an A shield final this Thursday in Scarden. Full details are available on our Facebook page.
The senior men came up short away to Bunninadden on Sunday where a win would have guaranteed Division two football for next year. They face St Pats next Sunday with our league status still in our hands. The U14 boys team begin their B Championship campaign underway with a home game against Castleconnor. After the step down from A League the lads will be looking to get their year back on track. Hard luck to the U-12 girls who just lost out to Calry/St. Joseph’s in the championship yesterday evening. The girls battled magnificently, and despite converting more scores lost out on a scoreline 7-3 4-10. Heads up girls, massive progress. Hard luck to the senior girls who battled hard against a St. Pats team on Wednesday evening but unfortunately it was not to be. Final score Owenmore Gaels 2-10 St. Pats 4-11. For all upcoming underage and Senior Owenmore Gaels fixtures, visit www.owenmoregaels.ie/calendar. Congratulations to Ross Taheny, selected in the Ireland squad for the upcoming world University games in Taiwan. A great honour for him and his family, and well deserved recognition for his talent Well done to Owenmore Gaels’ Gary Mullen and Gerry Dooner and the Sligo Masters Panel who had an impressive championship win over London on Saturday in Swinford. ST MARY’S
OUR talented U12 squads continue to impress and showed their full range of skills when they travelled to Collooney to play Owenmore Gaels last Tuesday. Our Division 3 side had a strong contest particularly in a tight first half, when our defence had to concentrate hard to keep a game Owenmore side out of easy scoring range. Well done lads and in particular to Conor Golden. This platform allowed us stretch our advantage and record a 15-9 victory with Harry Cawley excelling in an exciting second half. Our Division 1 team had a 25-16 win against same opponents but the result flattered us as with 5 minutes left there were only 4 scores in the game and a flurry of late scores put a gloss on the scoreboard. Dylan Streete had a superb 2nd half with Clyde Regan making an excellent impression on his first game with the older team. The U12s have a break of a week until their next matches away to Eastern Harps on Tuesday 25th. Our minor side should have had semi-final action during last week, but their opponents didn’t field and instead we wish the lads the best of luck in their Shield final against Geevagh/St Michael’s. The game will be played in the Centre of Excellence on Thursday night with a 6.30 throw-in, and please come out and support the team. In Men’s Football, our Senior squad travelled to Grange looking for a result to secure their position in the top Division. Worryingly we were without a number of players through injury. In warm conditions, our players showed great determination to grind out a draw thereby guaranteeing their Division one status. The final result in what turned out to be a very high scoring game was 3-10 to 1-16. Concentration will be switching to the Championship and training continues during the week. The Division 3 men’s team travelled to Enniscrone on Saturday evening. Down a number of regulars, due to Longitude commitments, we were still able to despatch a group of 18 men to do battle. Team selection had to be altered to accommodate a request to have the game played at 13 a side. Enniscrone won a highly enjoyable match, and we look forward to welcoming Eastern Harps to Kent Park on next Sunday at 1pm. In Ladies football we took on Championship heavy weights Tourlestrane in the second round of the Championship. Unfortunately we had to field an understrength team and despite the girls giving their all we were no match for Tourlestrane on this occasion. However our next match is against St Pats and a win there will guarantee a semi-final spot. A reminder that the race night social event is on in the clubhouse on this Friday the 21st of July. The recent table quizzes were highly enjoyable and this promises to be also.
