Beltra Market ‘embracing local community’ with international day

-

The Beltra market is a Sligo institution, with crowds flocking to West Sligo every Saturday to see the homemade goods on offer.

This Saturday’s instalment of the event will be an ‘International Day’, as the committee continually look to ‘embrace the wider community’.

“We generally get a lot of tourists coming along, and a lot of our members are from different countries,” explained Naomi McBride, PRO.

She added: “So we’ve invited people of other nationalities to the invite. We’ ll have a Cameroonian singer, and a magician.

“Sligo Global Kitchen will be there too, so it’s a very diverse mix,” she said.

The West Sligo singers will be present, while Debbie Beirne will bring Ruách Rhythms to the event.

“She is wonderful. She has the most amazing drums and percussion. Debbie sits in a tent playing the drums and all age groups just love it. It’s like the beating pulse to the market,” added Naomi.

A group of residents from Globe House have been invited. Debbie Beirne runs a volunteer programme in Ballaghaderreen and a number of the Syrian refugees will also be coming along to the market.

“They are very keen to integrate with the local community. We are planning some Syrian food and we want to make them feel welcome,” added Naomi.

“It’s sort of our birthday too, we’re going to seven years so there will be a bit of BBQ with guests and members and our regulars to celebrate life on the Wild Atlantic Way.

The ‘International Day’ at the Beltra Country Market takes place this Saturday, July 29 th, from 10am until 2pm.
