BANK’S CENTENARY

The Manorhamilton Branch of the Bank of Ireland celebrated 100 years in business in the town and surrounding area on Wednesday week last, July 12.

When the Bank of Ireland opened in Manorhamilton on July 12, 1917 it was located in Lower Main Street. It is still at the same location but Lower Main Street no longer exists, as it was officially renamed Seán MacDiarmada Street on May 29 last year, to mark locally the major role MacDiarmada played in organising the 1916 Rising.

Indeed, the Bank of Ireland was able to put on display some of its ledgers and other documents from its original 1917 operations in Manorhamilton, as part of the local MacDiarmada centenary commemorations last year.

Interestingly Seán MacDiarmada, who was the chief organiser for local man Charles Dolan, the unsuccessful Sinn Féin candidate in the 1908 North Leitrim by election campaign, ran the election campaign for Dolan in the building next door to the Bank of Ireland, namely (now) Keenan’s Butcher Shop.

Meantime Bank of Ireland manager, Rita Rouse has told me her Bank =93will be organising a number of events later this year to mark its centenary in Manorhamilton.=94
