City Centre Park to be named after the late Seamus O’Boyle

-

ON the second anniversary of his untimely death a city centre park is to be named after the late Seamie O’Boyle.

This Friday ‘O Boyle Park’ will be officially named at Forthill before friends and family of the former councillor.

The park off Connaughton road consists of a gaelic pitch, two soccer pitches, a running track with flood lights and a basket ball court. Just last week an outdoor multi-gym has been put in at the facility.

“It’s a hidden gem,” says Gino O’Boyle, the son of Seamie, who took his seat on the council.

“We are delighted for Dad. It is great to see the recognition for the work that he did. The memory of him will live on and his legacy will be there for generations to come. It is a great memory to have. We will be long gone and the name will still be there,” says Gino.

Councillor Declan Bree first raised the motion in the council and it was adopted by all.

“It is a wonderful tribute and a great honour. We are very grateful. The whole family and some friends will be there this Friday at one for the naming ceremony.”

Seamus O’Boyle died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrom on the 11 th August 2015 at the age of 58. He was reared in Sligo town all his life and was instrumental in developing the park at Forthill as Gino explains: “It used to be known as the Hill pitch. I played there as a young child but in recent years it needed to be re-done.

“It started to be redeveloped and Seamie was always pushing for this to be done. He would have been involved with this park for 20 plus years. It is the most fitting tribute to his memory.”
