Cycle for Hugh’s House charity comes to Sligo

-

HUGH’S House was established in 2015 by Ade Stack and Marty Curley following the death of their 8-month-old son Hugh.

The charity now operates two houses which provide costfree long and short term accommodation for parents forced to move to Dublin while their sick children are taken care of in Dublin hospitals.

Co-founder Ade Stack said: “It is the hardest thing in the world to have a sick child and nobody ever expects it. When it does happen, you end up far away from home without the support of your family. We were able to be with Hugh every day and when he died we could look back on every day spent together - it makes it bearable – there was no guilt.”

A charity cycle has just taken place from Mizen to Malin Head to raise funds for Hugh’s House.

The inaugural ‘Cycle for Hugh’s House’ took over 5 days from the 3rd to the 7 th of August. A core group of 20 cyclists tackled the 600km route from Mizen Head to Malin Head in order to raise much needed funds for the maintenance of services and continuing refurbishment of our two houses.

The route took cyclists into Sligo on Sunday where they had a pitt stop at Higgin’s Pharmacy to meet with some of the Sligo families who have used the charity homes.

Each day involved over 100km of cycling with fund raising efforts in each town along the route. In total, the cyclists covered a gruelling 600km over the five days.

Hugh’s House is an entirely volunteer driven charity. Each of the participating cyclists are self-funding their expenses, meaning all funds donated will go directly to the provision of services and the refurbishment of the family accommodation. Every euro will make a difference to the lives of families affected by a child’s illness.

The cycle aims to raise €40,000 which will fund an entire year of accommodation, food and related services for the hundreds of families who use this invaluable resource.
