Judge Kilrane claimed over €22k in expenses in six months
DISTRICT Court Judge Kevin Kilrane, who was appointed in 2008 and sits in the Leitrim/ Donegal/Sligo area, claimed just over €22,000 in expenses in the first six months of this year.
Almost €13,700 of this was for subsistence and more than €8,400 was for travel.
The amount placed Judge Kilrane in third position in terms of the highest sum claimed.
In 2014 he topped the expenses ‘ league’ when he lodged claims of €65,392, made up of travel expenses of €32,104 and accommodation expenses of €33,288.
He also claimed the highest expenses in the first six months of 2016 claiming €24,500 made up of more than €15,000 in subsistence and almost €9,000 in travel expenses from the Courts Service.
The single largest claim for January to June this year, of almost €22,630 was made at the District Court by Judge Alan Mitchell.
The former Fine Gael councillor, appointed in 2012, is a moveable judge who may be sent to districts across the country.
Judge Séamus Hughes, a former Fianna Fáil TD appointed in 2009, who sits in Longford/ Westmeath, claimed €22,626. Fourth was Judge Gerard Furlong (€19,913.36) and fifth was Judge James Faughnan (€19,471.84).
Of the 62 District Court judges who made claims in the first half of this year, 22 had higher subsistence claims than travel claims. Subsistence includes claims for meals and overnight accommodation when required.
