A novel cycle for the West
MANY local cycling enthusiasts will be heading west to Tuam, Co Galway this September for a dream cycle.
What you could call the cycle of a lifetime takes place on Sunday September 10 on the new M17-M18 Motorway, from Tuam to Gort and back.
Very few chances come along to cycle the pristine surface of a new road, particularly a motorway, before it opens to traffic but that is what cyclists will be able to do on this day only. The charity cycle in aid of Tuam and Gort Lions Clubs will start in Tuam, turn at Gort and return to Tuam — a total distance of 100 km. An alternative shorter route is available — Tuam to Athenry and back, a total distance of 50km. The registration fee will benefit the Lions Clubs in their work in the local community. Participants are also encouraged to use their involvement in the best way possible by fund-raising for their own chosen charities. This will be the safest cycle you can imagine: no traffic, no junctions, just you and the open road — and hundreds of other dedicated cyclists. The event is suitable for all ages from 16 up and all abilities, from leisure cyclists to club enthusiasts.
There will be refreshments along the way, and a sweeper vehicle to pick up anyone who experiences mechanical problems. The cycle is organised by Tuam and Gort Lions Clubs and Tuam Cycling Club, and kindly sponsored by DirectRoute, the consortium who are building the motorway, which is on target to open to motorised traffic in November.
