Olympian Barr guest for North Sligo banquet

The North Sligo Athletic Club is celebratin­g a milestone this year as it’s 40 years since its formation.

The club is hosting a gala night in the Radisson Blu Hotel in October, where Olympic hurdler Thomas Barr will be special guest.

The function is being held on October 6th from 7.30pm in the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Tickets are €40 and there will be live music along with spot prizes.

Barr, from Waterford is the current Irish Record Holder in the 400m Hurdles, after setting a time of 47.97at last year’s Olympics Games in Rio.

In the Men’s finals, the 25-year-old narrowly missed out on a podium place, finishing fourth while setting a new Irish Record in the 400m Hurdles.

The Waterford man is a four-time national champion in the 400m hurdles and has represente­d Ireland multiple times in underage and senior competitio­n.

A few weeks ago, the hurdler won Gold in the Men’s 400m Hurdles event during the Irish Life Health National Senior Track & Field Championsh­ips at the Morton Stadium in Santry.

Back in November, Barr was named as the Athlete of the Year at the Irish Life Health National Athletics Awards 2016. He also won the Track and Field Athlete of the Year at the same ceremony.

North Sligo AC has a proud history, some of Sligo’s elite runners have emerged from the club, including European Bronze medallist Mary Cullen and U20 Men’s 400m star, Chris O’Donnell.
