Moments captured by Brian’s lens over 50 years to go on display

-

Tubbercurry photographer Brian Cashill will celebrate fifty years of capturing Moylough community through the lens with a special exhibition this month.

The now-retired teacher first started capturing daily life in south Sligo as a trainee teacher in Moylough National School in 1967.

For the first time ever, a photo exhibition of his work will go on public display in the Moylough Heritage Centre, Tubbercurry during Heritage week 19-20 th August.

“He’s one in a million,” said one of Brian’s former pupils Ann-Marie Wright.

“He’s very modest but he has recorded social history with his collection of nearly 200 framed photographs,” she told The Sligo Champion.

The photos include sporting events, special occasions and events, Tubbercurry Town Twinning, traditions of our past, harvesting, turf cutting, church and school.

Brian first introduced the tin whistle to Moylough N.S. and created their school bands. One of the school’s band’s highlights was a trip to New York to march in their St Patrick’s Day parade.

Not only has he captured the elder characters of the community, he has just bookended an era which started with Brian taking photos of each class with their teacher in 1967 by returning fifty years later to the classes of 2017 and photographing schoolchildren with their teachers.

Brian’s collection of photographs represents a significant display of his passion for the lens and the community.

His musical talents also continue to be shared with the community - Brian is the organist in Moylough church and he’s still on hand to take First Communion photos.

“He was the backbone of our Pride of Place bid a few years ago as well,” said Ann Marie.

There are 170 photos for Moylough residents to enjoy in the upcoming exhibition which will be accompanied by Ciaran McGowan’s vintage camera display.

It launches 7pm Saturday 19 th August.
