St John’s no match for Cloonacool

CLOONACOOL ST JOHN’S 3- 19 0- 2 THIS game in the Lola Montez Junior A Championship was one St John’s similar to Tyrone last Sunday, would like to forget. They were outclassed by a smart Cloonacool side, who put the game to bed early on as St John’s struggled throughout the hour.

The Cloonacool 2- 14 to one point advantage at halftime could have been even more, had they converted five wides, but the Bill Carty/ Fergus Leonard managed side were thoroughly dominant in this Group 2 round 2 affair, with St John’s limping to the end.

With only 15 seconds registered, Cloonacool were on the scoreboard, Brian Towey pointing from play with three further unanswered points before St John’s Fergal Kelly converted a free on 11 minutes.

Cloonacool were seven points ahead with 15 minutes played as things got even worse for St John’s when Packie McIntyre netted the first goal for Cloonacool on 16 minutes.

McIntyre’s hammering shot slammed off the post before going into the back of the St John’s net.

The woes continued for St John’s when less than a minute later the game’s second goal arrived and Jordan Brennan found the back of the net to give the south Sligo club a 2- 8 to one point advantage.

The scores kept coming from the revved up Cloonacool, with Jason Brennan scoring five unanswered points as the half- time break approached.

Another from Ciaran McIntyre saw them ahead by 2- 14 to one point at the interval.

St John’s got the first score after the resumption, which was to be their last score of the game.

A John Reilly 45 sailed between the posts for Niall Gordon’s men but any chance of them clawing back the 18 point lead was quickly ruled out as Cloonacool kept on advancing.

It was the influential Jordan Brennan who scored their third goal on 45 minutes.

His shot was initially saved well by St John’s keeper Conor McGovern.

However McGovern picked up an injury and the ball rebounded into the path of Brennan who slotted into the net.

Cloonacool were cruising with further scores from Jason Brennan, Conor Prendergast and Joseph Neary seeing them finish on a winning scoreline of 3- 19 to two points as referee Cathal Martyn signalled the end of the encounter with three minutes to go.
