THE above story is one example of how Palliative care aims to ensure that a person with any serious, progressiv­e and life limiting illness can have the best quality of life possible.

Palliative Care Week runs this week with the aim of raising awareness of the difference palliative care can make to patients, carers and families. North West Hospice is your local Hospice and provides palliative care for Sligo, Leitrim, South Donegal and West Cavan which has a population of approx 110,000 people. As part of Palliative Care week North West Hospice are holding an informatio­n afternoon this Thursday 7 th of September from 3-5pm at the North West Hospice Centre in Wine St car park and all are invited to attend. Last year, North West Hospice raised over €110,000 through 300 coffee mornings. All money raised goes directly to North West Hospice essential palliative care services.

Bernadette McGarvey of North West Hospice said: “To maintain our current level of service, we have to fundraise over €1million every year. By hosting a coffee morning you can make a difference to people’s lives. Coffee mornings happen in all shapes and sizes: People have them in their own homes with their family and friends or in their workplaces or local communitie­s.”
