May deadline is the target for works
OVER 35 per cent of the Sligo water mains and sewer rehabilitation project has now beencompleted with the pipe laying works on target for finishing in next May.
Irish Water, working in partnership with Sligo County Council and Ward & Burke Contractors has once againthanked the businesses, residents and shoppers of Sligo for “their continued patience and co-operation while the project progresses.”
The works represent a €6.8 million investment by Irish Water in Sligo and will ensure an improved supply to all customers by reducing leakage and bursts. The project will also deliver financial savings over the medium and long term through reduced maintenance costs associated with the upgraded pipeline.
“The public will have noticed that a new road surface has been laid on Thomas Street, Teeling Street, and on the Lower Pearse Road as well as new road markings following the completion of works in these areas.
“Works are now progressing on less congested areas of the city and Sligo County Council along with the contractor will continue to liaise with An Garda Síochána to implement traffic management plans where necessary and erect advance warning signage,” said a spokesperson for Irish Water.
The company’s Infrastructure Regional Lead, Padraig Hanly said: “There has been unavoidable disruption to businesses, motorists and res- idents during the course of these works and Irish Water and its partners would like to acknowledge this and reiterate our thanks once again to everyone who is impacted but who will ultimately benefit from these works.
“The project team will continue to notify the local community in advance of planned works in their areas and provide contact details should they have any queries.”
The overall project involves the replacement and rehabilitation of approximately 8.7km of ageing water mains, the installation of 1.5km of foul and storm sewers in the Pearse Road area and the replacement of all service connections including any lead services encountered.
Irish Water is committed to reducing network leakage to less than 38% by 2021.
