Carew has ‘left a solid foundation for successor’
THE Secretary of Sligo GAA says Niall Carew’s era has strengthened the Sligo panel, and progress has been made during his time.
The announcement came that the Kildare man was to leave the post despite earlier agreeing to a fourth year in charge.
Carew took over as Sligo boss in 2014 after previously overseeing Waterford and being part of the Kildare set-up with Kieran McGeeney.
In a statement released on Thursday afternoon, Mr. O’Connor paid tribute to the Kildare man who announced on Thursday that he was stepping down from his role as manager of the Sligo county panel.
“Niall Carew has today, Thursday, informed An Rúnaí that due to increased work commitments he will not be in a position to remain as Senior Team Man- ager for the Sligo football team,” the statement read.
“The opportunity that has presented itself in terms of his occupation was unanticipated and Niall regrets the necessity to make this decision so soon after his reappointment as Bainisteoir.
“Sligo County Committee wish to thank Niall for the undoubted progress that he has made with the senior team over the last three years.
“His era has coincided with excellent performances against teams in higher divisions and the introduction of new talent has further strengthened the panel. He has left a solid foundation for his successor. “I have no doubt that Niall has more to contribute to the GAA and I wish Niall, Michelle, Sadhbh, Caoimhe and Páidí every good wish for the future.
