O’Reilly thrilled to win

WINNING captain Stephanie O’Reilly was smiling brightly after collecting the eighth Senior championship title for her club. She said the girls put in a huge effort on the day. “It was a massive scoreline, I didn’t realise it was as big as it was. I suppose we got a great start with the early goals and that definitely helped us. In comparison to last year, this year we didn’t drop the heads and we kept pushing on to get the next score,” she added.

“We kept plugging on and plugging on and got a bit of luck too that you need on every game day. The girls are absolutely fantastic and right to the very end, no matter what the score was, they kept fighting right to the end.”

She said having been runners up last year was also another factor.

“It drove us on and we were beaten in the League as well, we thought we didn’t do ourselves justice but in saying that the better team won that day.

“No matter what game you lose be it a final, or a championship or league game, it’s important you get back on track again and thankfully we did that today,” she explained.

Stephanie said the Geevagh panel deserved great praise. “We have young girls that have been in with us now for the last two or three years and you can see how they are pushing through.

“But you need that. You need that in every club and St Nathy’s too there today had a few of their young girls.

“Every year they are pushing on and without them there isn’t a senior team.

“There’s small numbers and you need everyone that’s available to be there and give it their best shot.

“Thankfully for our girls everything went well for us today,” Stephanie said.

Player of the Match, teenager Jemma Brehony was playing alongside her mum Nicola and Stephanie praised both players,

“It is very special. Jemma was great and Nicola was just as good.

“She is a trojan worker and she never gives up. There were sisters there today too, you have Elaine and myself and Yvonne and Sarah. Even Nora and Lorraine too.

“It’s really a family affair when you get back to club. But we are absolutely delighted and we will push on now for Connacht.

“We will give it our best shot. We’ll enjoy the couple of days and then knuckle down. There will be big celebrations in Geevagh tonight,” the captain added.
