All-Ireland Wheelchair Hurling finals on in October
SLIGO is hosting the All-Ireland Wheelchair Hurling and Camogie finals this month.
The prestigious event is taking place in the Knocknarea Arena at IT Sligo on Saturday, October 14th.
The Martin Donnelly Interprovincial Finals, which are expected to draw large crowds to IT Sligo, is being organised by the Sligo GAA Inclusion/Games for all Committee in collaboration with Sligo Sports & Recreation Partnership (SSRP) and National Games for All Committee.
The event is being held from 11.00am to 15.40pm. The first game is at 12.00pm.
This is a great honour for the Sligo GAA Inclusion/Games for All Committee and the Sligo Sports & Recreation Partnership to host the fifth M Donnelly GAA All-Ireland Wheelchair hurling / camogie Championship Finals after being granted the privilege by Croke Park. This was in honour of Sligo being nominated as the European Volunteer Capital 2017.
Tim Hynes, Chairman of the Sligo Games for All committee, said it was brilliant for Sligo to have the honour of host this year.
He added: “This event is usually Dublin based and we are delighted to host the finals in Sligo and play our part in the enormous volunteering efforts across County Sligo.
“Wheelchair hurling / camogie is going from strength to strength and ensures that our great games can be enjoyed by both able bod- ied and people with a disability, alike,” he said.
Brian Armitage, National GAA for All Chairman, added: “When our Committee talks about GAA for All, it’s days like these we mean.
“I’d like to pay a special mention to our GAA volunteer network and of course our Coaching personnel.
“Lastly and by no means least, I’d like to thank Martin Donnelly for his continuous sponsorship,” he added.
Tim Hynes praised the contribution from the Connacht Games for All Committee Chairman Denis O’Boyle and Secretary Mattie Kilroy, along with the efforts of the National Games for All Com- mittee Chairman Brian Armitage and Tony Watene for helping with organising the event.
Tim added: “Finally sincere thanks to the Connacht GAA Council and especially John Prenty (Secretary) and President Mick Rock for supporting the Connacht Wheelchair Hurling /Camogie team, and to Sligo GAA County Board and chairman Joe Taffe for their assistance. Sincere thanks to the wheelchair hurling / camogie players for their time, determination and effort in playing and promoting the game of wheelchair hurling / camogie.”
IT Sligo will be a hive of activity for the finals on October 14th.
