The Sligo Champion

GRASSROOTS

-

we could not close out the game and Tourlestrane worked a chance which they converted to a goal and held on to this slender lead for victory.

THE game was played in perfect conditions in Kent Park, more like the start of the Summer rather than the start of Winter and our lads got off to a quick start, when Hadi Moussa finished a good team move. The teams were evenly matched from the start, and no quarter was given anywhere on the field. The first half had many talking points, and our lads edged it on the scoreboard, particularly after a quality save from Niall Crawley was shortly followed by a bullet of a goal from Hadi. Tourlestrane tagged on a couple of points before the break to leave us leading by 5 points on a scoreline of 2-06 to 1-07.

THE break came at the right time for Tourlestrane and our lead was trimmed back, when Tourlestrane scored 1-03 to a solitary point from our Adam Lynch. This left the match level with only 10 minutes of the half gone and then all looked lost when Tourlestrane kept breaking through our defence to engineer scores, and a lead of 4 points. Somehow we stopped them building too big a lead and then Marys grabbed the momentum and 4 incredible points from Nathan Rooney levelled matters again, before equally impressive point taking from Gerard O’Kelly Lynch and Paul Kilcoyne gave us what looked like a winning 2 point margin. Nobody told Tourlestrane and a move from their half ended with a goal which left us losing by 1 point as the final whistle blew. A very difficult way to lose any match, but we kept playing to the end and just failed to close the match out. Quite a number of the players were back playing after a break in football and we look forward to everyone turning out for the club next season. ON behalf of St Marys, we wish to express condolences to Patricia Lynch and John Monaghan and their extended families on the death of their father, Michael Monaghan, and may he rest in peace. The sporting tradition from the Monaghan family continues through Michael’s grandchildren, Patricia’s children Kelly-Lee, David and Adam (the lads togged out for Sunday’s U21 game), and through John’s children Hannah, Ruth, Helen and Gillian (Ruth is part of the Ladies Squad who contest the Connaught Intermediate final next weekend).

TOURLESTRANE

OUR u21 lads began their campaign this afternoon in an unusually warm October day and although this competition is played off very late in the year and after the euphoria of last weekend’s 2 in a row for the Senior men, this clash between St Mary’s and Tourlestrane younger men always promised to be a well contested 60 mins of action ! Throughout the nail biting game both teams swapped leads on more than one occasion with st Mary’s having the lead of 2/6 to 7 points at half time . That said the keepers at both ends of the field denied the forwards certain goals more than once but the Tourlestrane team managed by Neil Egan Eamon Durkin and Diarmuid Dunne seemed to up their game after the dressing room talk mid way and came out looking more hungry for the win than they had in the first 30 and at one stage led by 4 points. However St Mary’s were always biting at their heels and came back to level it off before our lads with some handy mid fielding from the well placed kick outs and working the ball through to the hard working forwards won out by the narrowest of margins to earn their place in the next round ! Score at the final whistle Tourlestrane 3/13 St Mary’s 2/15 . Well done to all ! CONGRATULATIONS to the Sligo Gaelic Masters who had a strong win Saturday afternoon v Cavan Masters in Drumlish especially our club men and this sees the team through to the All Ireland Final in 2 weeks time v Mayo Masters . WELL done to all the Banada Banshee Bash crew who once again this year with the willing assistance of our teenagers particularly the Minor teams successfully scared the livers out of a huge volume of people who dared to walk the forest and to those braver still who took to the creepy stairways of the ‘convent’ the three nights of this weekend ! Not for the faint hearted but a Halloween experience certainly not to be missed !!! Maith sibh go léir
