Hike under the night sky in Union Wood astronomy walk
TOMORROW, Wednesday 15 th, the Carrowkeel Archaeology Walk will take place as part of Science Week at IT Sligo. A free bus will bring walkers from IT Sligo at 9:30am. It will be guided by archaeologist Sam Moore of IT Sligo, and promises to be a fascinating tour of one of Sligo’s most ancient sites. Those interested in attending should contact melia.oli@itsligo.ie beforehand. Please bring your walking boots and suitable outdoor clothing as well as a snack.
Later on, a 5km/10km walk and Run in the Dark will leave from Sligo Hospital at 8pm in aid of the Mark Pollard Trust. Note that there’s a charge of €25 for registration for this event, but this goes to a great cause.
On Friday 17 th November, a ‘Moonwalking in Sligo’ moonlit walk will take place at Union Wood organised by Northwest Adventure Tours.
You’ ll get to hike under the starlit sky and learn the wonders of astronomy and what our ancestors thought about the skies. Walkers will also discover how Star Wars really originated in Sligo and get to chill out under the stars while enjoying a warm drink and some tips from a professional night sky photographer.
Be sure to bring your cameras along and pick up some new tips along the way.
The hike will coincide with the tail end of Leonid’s Meteor Shower so you might be lucky enough to spot a few shooting stars.
And in a family event – the Science Trail takes place in and around Sligo Town throughout the week. Using a trail map, you are challenged to find 18 separate objects in 18 different locations. You can drop your completed entry into Fabio’s Ice Cream shop on Lower Knox St, where you will be rewarded for your efforts, and an overall winner will also be picked later.
The Sligo Walking Club have updated their events calendar to include weekly walks taking place up to the end of February 2018. This Saturday, November 18th, they will take in the stunning route between Raghley and Cloonagh, including a visit to the Bronze Age promontory fort at Knocklane. This is a 12km walk and will last approximately 4 hours.
