Bourbon defeat table toppers Cornview

-

THE Bourbon Bar claimed a 1-0 victory over Cornview Celtic in the Sligo Rovers Astro League on Monday to inflict a first defeat of the season on the table toppers. There was a lot of hype and expectation going into the game, with both sides registering a very strong start to their respective campaigns. Going into the game, a win for the Bourbon Bar would see them go level on top, while a win for Cornview would have given them a six point cushion over their opponents. As expected the game was frantic from the start, with both sides eager to get a foothold. Both teams had chances in what was a wet and windy night for football, but failed to make the most of them in the final third. It was the Bourbon Bar who dealt the first blow of the game as Kevin Egan notched his first goal of the season to give his Bourbon side a

1-0 lead.

Cornview had remained unbeaten all last year, and were eager to protect their phenomenal run of form. On the stroke of full time, Cornview were gifted an opportunity to make it 1-1 from the penalty spot. Up stepped Stephen Coen but he failed to hit the back of the net and as a result the Bourbon registered an historic victory to send them level on points at the top of the league standings. There was similar drama between GSS and the Sally Gardens on Wednesday last, as both sides went into the game looking to kick start their season. The game looked set for a scoreless 0-0 draw as both sides failed to seriously test their opponents on goals. However, on the brink of full time, the Sally Gardens were rewarded a penalty which would of almost guaranteed them all three points. However the penalty effort rebounded off the post and GSS went on the counter attack. Ironically, it was GSS who scored an injury time winner from the counter attack courtesy of Dermot O’Connor. This could prove to be a turning point for GSS, who have struggled somewhat so far this season. Elsewhere, there were also wins for the Bald Eagles and Forrest Celtic. Bald Eagles registered a 2-0 victory over the White Gorillas with goals from Anthony Henneberry and Ovis Vitolins. Forrest Celtic recorded a 4-1 victory over Inter, with goals from Luke brennan and a hat-trick from Seamus Kane ensuring the three points. Jack Lacey scored for Inter. In the only other game of the week, Calry played out a 1-1 draw with Foleys Bar. Jason Murphy scored for Calry while Gary Fallon was the goal scorer for Foleys.

This weeks fixtures: Wednesday @8pm Cornview Celtic vs White Gorillas, @9pm Calry vs. GSS; Friday @8pm Bourbon Bar vs. Forrest Celtic; @9pm Bald Eagles vs. Strand Celtic. INSET: Jim Sheridan (Bourbon Bar), John Griffin (Referee) & Darren Kearns (Cornview).
