Bourbon Bar defeat Calry in the Astro league

-

THE Bourbon Bar completed a 1-0 victory over Calry on Tuesday in the Sligo Rovers Astro League, to maintain the pressure on leaders Cornview Celtic. Going into the game, the Bourbon knew nothing but a victory would suffice while Calry were still chasing a top 6 finish. The game proved quite open, with Calry playing on the counter attack. The Bourbon Bar were guilty of missing some guilt edge chances, with David Blain, David Adams and Kevin Egan proving the main dangers. Just when the game seemed to be heading scoreless, the only goal was scored eight minutes from time courtesy of the poacher Kevin Egan after a wonderful ball in from Shaun Dunne. To Calry’s credit, they battled on to find an equaliser but failed to capitalise in the final third. The result ensured the Bourbon Bar remain right in the hunt for the title.

League leaders Cornview Celtic registered a 4-2 victory over the Bald Eagles, to maintain their two point cushion at the top. Gareth Kelly opened the scoring from the penalty spot less than 10 minutes into the game. However, the Bald Eagles who had won three of their last four going into the game, showed why by responding instantly with an equaliser through Seamie Cannon. Both sides had chances thereafter as the Bald Eagles could sense an upset. However, they seem to do it week after week and Cornview battled their way back into the game and went ahead with three quick fire goals through Stephen Coen, Keith Carty and another from Ga- reth Kelly. The Eagles responded on the stroke of full time with a sublime free kick from Darren Adams to make it 4-2.

Inter Inferno had an impressive victory over the White Gorillas as they thumped their rivals 5-1. Ray Mulvey, Brian Connellan, Brian Swayne and a brace from Jack De Lacy ensured the Inter men remain well in touch for a top half finish before the Christmas break. The ever prolific Joey Kennedy got on the score sheet for the Gorillas who are destined for a bottom half finish. The final two games of the week were thrillers with Forrest Celtic and GSS playing out a 4-4 draw, while Ballymote defeated last year’s champions Sally Gardens 3-2. Forrest Celtic would be the happier of the two sides despite throwing away a two goal advantage, as it was their opponents GSS who needed the win to maintain any hope of a top half finish. As a result, Forrest looks secure in the top half while GSS have it all to do in their final two games. This was a first win since September 29th for Ballymote, who to their credit still have an outside chance of a top six finish while the Sally Gardens have a serious battle on their hands. This week’s fixtures: Tuesday @ 9pm Bald Eagles vs. Forrest Celtic Wednesday @8pm Bourbon Bar vs. White Gorillas @9pm Ballymote vs. GSS Friday @ 8pm Calry vs. Sally Gardens @9PM Cornview vs. Strand Celtic.
