New pontoon and pier at the Point

-

ROSSES Point has got its long awaited pontoon and access ramp.

The structure, costing €150,000, was put in place in the run-up to Christmas and has been given a broad welcome by users and locals. The development includes a floating pontoon and access ramp in addition to a new dinghy mooring system.

Cllr Declan Bree said: “While the existing pier and harbour in Rosses Point is a major asset, being the only usable non tidal pier in the area, it was also recognised that there was a significant lack of tying up facilities with severe overcrowding at peak times and poor accessible points for embarkation and disembarkation of passengers. This new pier and pontoon will now provide the much needed safe access to and from vessels. “I wish to pay tribute to Mr Daryl Ewing and the members of the Rosses Point Pier Action Committee who have lobbied and campaigned for this project over the years and who ensured that it was treated as a priority issue on the Council’s capital projects programme. Thanks are also due to Mr Tom Kilfeather Director of Services and Mr Gary Salter, Engineer. During the Summer hundreds of people use the pier and harbour every week.

“The new pier and pontoon will provide a unique facility for the many visitors who engage charter boats for sea angling and for sightseeing and for the many local boat owners and fishermen.”
