Enniscrone Golf Club’s big plans for centenary year
ENNISCRONE Golf Club is gearing up for a milestone year in 2018 as the club celebrates its centenary.
Founded in 1918, the west Sligo club has a number of events planned for their 100th year including a gala banquet, special competitions and the publication of a book detailing the history of the club.
The club will also host the Irish Ladies Close Championship and the Irish Seniors Close Championship next summer.
Originally a nine-hole design in its early years, the club expanded to 18 holes in 1974 with the late Eddie Hackett the architect of a new links at Bartragh, while the club also opened a new clubhouse at the same time.
BOYLE
THE Club’s Christmas Bonanza Competition was played on Sunday the 17th of December. Shane Loftus came 1st in the men’s competition with 32 points. The next 3 places in the men’s section went to David Purser, Terry Canning and Ross Andrew, who each had 31 points and were separated only on countback.
Ruth Hogg won the ladies’ section with Carmel McGarry in 2nd place. 3rd and 4th went to Paula Cull and Moira Egan respectively.
At the prize-giving Men’s Captain Terry Canning presented Patrick Egan with a trophy for topping the order of merit for Golfer of the Year 2017.
Raffle prizes were won by Michael Simon, Michael Rush, Patrick Egan, Susan O’Mahoney, Michael Gilmartin, Jonathan Egan and Marie Gallagher.
There was a Gents 9 hole Stableford planned for next Sunday, Christmas Eve and on the 27th of December we will hold our Christmas 9 hole Ladies and Gents Scramble. Names need to be in for the draw for teams at 12.45pm with a shotgun start at 1pm.
The 18-hole course remained in existence until 2001, when the club further expanded by building six new holes in the largest dunes on the 400-acre site to create the new championship links called the Dunes.
A further three holes were added on flatter land to complete the nine-hole Scurmore course.
Renowned English architect Donald Steel created the new holes, meaning the present links is a combination of Hackett and Steel’s work.
The course attracts golfers from around the world. Anyone with any information that may be useful for the centenary book - set to be launched next August - can contact info@enniscronegolf.com or call the club on (096) 36297.
