Driver lost control and overturned car at 4am on the N15

-

A young driver who lost control of her car resulting in it overturning on the main Sligo to Donegal road was fined €300 for careless driving by Judge Kevin Kilrane at Sligo District Court.

Before the court was Nessa Brennan of Newtownward, Grange who was summoned for dangerous driving at Mount Temple, Grange on July 8th 2016.

At the outset of the case, Mr Gerard McGovern, solicitor (defending) said he was prepared to offer a plea to a reduced charge of careless driving subject to the approval of the court.

Outlining the facts of the case, Inspector Donal Sweeney said Gardaí received a report of an accident at 4am at Mount Temple.

Gardaí found a car on its roof on the grass verge of the main road.

A witness who saw the car losing control told Gardaí that the car was being driven extremely dangerous in the moments before the crash and it had rolled a couple of times.

Judge Kilrane agreed to the submission to reduce the charge to one of careless driving. He was told the defendant did not have any previous convictions.

Mr McGovern pleaded that the defendant had learned the lesson of her life and had gone through a bad time in the aftermath of the crash and had rarely gone out.

She would mind herself in future and had possibly been working too hard at the time and there was probably another matter at play too.

Mr McGovern said the defendant worked away from home and needed her licence.

“I would ask that you not take away her licence,” Mr McGovern pleaded.

She had never caused a day’s trouble for her parents who were in court to support her.

Judge Kilrane imposed a fine of €300 with the conviction also attracting five penalty points.
