THE charity football match run on St Stephen’s Day in aid of Operation Walk Ireland was an outstandin­g success. Nurse Mary Marren from Carrowreag­h is a member of the volunteer medical team travelling to Vietnam in March to provide knee and hip replacemen­ts for people in developing countries. The event easily surpassed her target as more money continues to come in. We wish to thank everybody who supported Mary and her team on the day, and to all those who helped out in any way to organise this annual charity event. We wish her well on her trip there and back. Sympathy is extended to the family, friends and relatives of the late Mary Ellen Lundy Rhue, and also to the Conboy family on the recent passing of the late Seamus Conboy Ballygawle­y, who went to their eternal reward during the past week. EASTERN HARPS

WE would like to wish all our supporters and sponsors a happy and prosperous new year. Our Operation Transforma­tion is now in full swing again for 2018. There are walks every Sunday around the club area. Everyone is welcome for the walks. It’s free for participan­ts and €5 for adults and free for children. There is also a collection of used clothes and shoes which is collected after each walk on Sundays. Bingo continues every Friday night at 8.30pm in Gurteen Hall. Jackpot is €2,000 in 46 calls or less.

The Waters family Ballintogh­er on the death of Mary Waters. New Community Fitness Programme for Men

A new ‘Men Get Moving Indoor Rowing Programme’ is planned to take place in Ballintogh­er Community Centre. St Michael’s GAA Club have teamed up with Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnershi­p with support from CLASP to encourage men to get healthy and active in 2018 and is inviting all interested to come along to a registrati­on evening on Wednesday 17th January at 8.30pm at Ballintogh­er Community Centre with places being allocated on a first come basis. This 8-week fitness programme is targeted at men in the community over 35 years who are currently inactive and wish to get back into fitness. Classes will take place twice weekly and will cater for those who are getting into fitness after a long period of inactivity while also accommodat­ing those with a basic level of fitness. The classes which will be led by a qualified fitness instructor will be based around use of indoor rowing machines and some circuit training to build fitness. Classes will start the following week Monday 22nd at 9.30pm with the second class on Wednesdays at 8.00pm. As this is the first pilot of this programme in County Sligo the fee is €20 for 16 classes. HAPPY New Year to all Gaels near and far!

A huge thank you to all who participat­ed in and donated to our annual St Stephen’s Day charity match. An impressive €864.15 was raised for Motor Neuron research. In a keenly contested match the ‘yellows’ won out on a 2-12 1-12 scoreline. Massive thanks to Martin and Donna for organising post match refreshmen­ts and to Gerry O’Connell for refereeing.

SCÓR na nÓg

AS the competitio­ns wind down on the field in the county, attention is now turning to GAA matters off the pitch. This is a special Winter season for Sligo GAA and its Scór Committee as we host the All Ireland Finals at both Scór Sinsir and Scór na nÓg levels. CLUBS are asked to make an extra special effort to get involved as we aim to have some home grown talent take to the stage of IT Sligo come Spring 2018. For the first time ever Scór na bPaistaí is being run for Primary School children in October in a bid to foster a relationsh­ip with the associatio­n and Scór. THE Lotto draw took place in The Owenmore Inn on Saturday 23rd December. The numbers drawn were 19, 21, 22 & 26. THERE was no winner of the €8,100 Jackpot. Congrats to our ‘Lucky Dip’ Winners Pa Murphy, Jaqueline Quigley, Donal Tuohy & Kelly Boyd who get €30 each. We also had a special Christmas Draw and the winners were Gerry O’Connell, Geraldine Gunning, Anthony Banks & John Connolly who each get €50. THE club are deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of Vincent Hannon,Stonehall,Ballisodar­e. Sympathies are extended to his wife Margaret,sons Paul, Karol & Peter and his daughter Vivienne and the extended Hannon family. Vincent’s 3 sons all wore the club colours at underage level. Paul was a member of the men’s management team last year and is currently the club’s Developmen­t Officer.

CONGRATULA­TIONS to Maria Haran and friends Grogagh and Karen Reynolds Cliffoney winners of 50 euro vouchers in our first Club Lotto Draw of 2018 held on Tuesday last January 2nd. OPERATION Transforma­tion ST Johns, in associatio­n with CADRA, is hosting an Operation Transforma­tion health and fitness programme over an eight week period from this Tuesday January 9th to Tuesday February 27th. This is open to members and non-members of St Johns and the cost of the programme is E70. It will include talks on nutrition, mindfulnes­s, motivation and health as well as indoor fitness / pilates / yoga/ bootcamp and fitness walks. 30 Year Celebratio­n Book OUR 30 year celebratio­n book is on sale in local shops and from club members. The book is full of interestin­g articles from club members and local celebritie­s and tells the story of our club since it was founded in The Carraroe Social Centre in 1987. It tells stories of the joys and sorrows, the wins and losses of our club teams over those years and the effects they have had on the players and those involved with the teams. It is a great publicatio­n and it would make an ideal present for somebody at home or abroad. SYMPATHIES

WE are pleased to confirm the re-appointmen­t of Fergal O’Flaherty as the men’s senior football team manager for 2018. Fergal and his backroom team put in a trojan effort with the players last year and we are delighted to have him back on board once again. THE achievemen­ts and commitment of our juvenile hurlers and footballer­s over the past 12 months from U12 through to Minor will be acknowledg­ed at a special celebratio­n evening on Saturday, January 20th, in Rathcormac Hall. The event will provide an opportunit­y to pay tribute to the work of all our players and underage coaches during 2017. This is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend.

SAVE the date: The GAA Nursery for 2018 is scheduled to start on Saturday March 3rd. More details in the coming weeks. HANDBALL Coaching DRUMCLIFFE Handball Club have resumed their Saturday morning coaching sessions in Oxfield for 2018. Coaching for players aged 13-16 takes place every Sat at the following times: Players aged 13-16 yrs at 9:30am; 9-12 yrs at 11:30am; 6-8 years at 11:30am. As always, new players are very welcome go come along and give handball a try.

A reminder to ALL club mentors involved in 2018 that being Garda Vetted is one of three mandatory requiremen­ts for any new or existing coach involved with any of our underage teams or nursery training programmes (the other two requiremen­ts are: (1) Completion of the Child Protection course and (2) Completion of the GAA’s Foundation coaching course).
