PHOENIX PLAYERS

The Phoenix Players will be performing their latest three-act play ‘Buried Child’ by Sam Shepard in St Brigid’s Hall on Thursday and Friday, February 15, and 16. The group will soon be embarking on the three act festival circuit, presenting this prize winning play to audiences nationally. The stellar cast includes Pat Feeley, Mary Walsh, Francis Brennan, Kieran Brennan, Eamonn Gallagher, Shane Loftus and Claire McLoughlin, with the capable Peter Davey directing. Tickets cost €12 (€10 concession) and will be available on the door. Curtains up at 8 p.m. nightly. A show not to be missed.

DRAMA FESTIVAL LAUNCH

The launch of the Western Drama Festival takes place on Sunday night, February 18, in St Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurr­y just after the performanc­e of the wonderful ‘Drawer Boy, presented by the Beeznees Theatre Company. The play commences at 8 p.m. Please come along to what promises to be a lovely evening in St Brigid’s Hall.

We are delighted to have Tommy Marren as our special guest for our 75th Anniversar­y celebrator­y launch. To complement the occasion the Western Drama Festival committee will host a wine reception, and patrons will be introduced to the 2018 Programme of plays and events to celebrate the 75th Anniversar­y. TUBBERCURR­Y TWINNING

Tubbercurr­y Twinning Group are planning a trip to Cutigliano in the Tuscany region of Italy from May 8 to May 13.

A group from Tubbercurr­y’s Twinning town Viarmes in France will be joining with Tubbercurr­y group. The local group will be travelling from Dublin to Pisa and onward then to Cutigliano, and will be staying in a local hotel. Some suggestion­s for activities while there, are, Forest walks, an urban hike in the city of Lucca, trip to Chianti and visit a winery, trip to cheese making dairy or visit olive oil company.

WRITERS GROUP

The Tubbercurr­y Writers Group meets every Friday in Tubbercurr­y Library between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Everyone welcome to come along.

HOLY FAMILY NS

Holy Family NS are holding an open day on Thursday, February 22, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Parents are invited to visit the school to see our school in action. There will be a variety of activities on the day – Ready Set Go Maths, Literacy Lift Off, music, dance and Computers.

Congratula­tions to the boys and girls who took part in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Indoor Hurling Competitio­n on February 6 in the Teeling Centre. It was a busy and competitiv­e day. Well done to our boys’ team who have qualified for the next round.

We are very proud of our third class pupil Tiernan Cooke, who represente­d Ireland at the Millrose Games. Tiernan qualified at Ireland’s fastest boy through Believe and Achieve. Well done to our past pupil Ellen Kilcoyne, who ran in the four x 200m relay.

Children from third to sixth class took part in the National Diversity Games in Athlone in January. The children had a great experience there and also much success. We had Gold in sprints from Arlin Barrett, Nadia Udo Ubong, Kyle McDonagh, Cian Flynn. Shannon Davey and Ava Sharkey also had gold in long jump and shot putt. There were silver medals for three of our relay teams and bronze for our girls 3/fourth class relay team. There were also silver medals for Conor McDonagh and Cian Flynn in long jump, Mathilda and Cara King in sprints. It was a great experience for all.

NORTH CONNAUGHT COLLEGE

North Connaught College Tubbercurr­y is hosting its open evening on Thursday, March 1, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. for PLC and VTOS courses. School leavers and adults are all welcome. Teachers, Guidance Counsellor, Student Support Tutor and current students will be available to deal with any queries or questions that you may have. There will be taster sessions in some of the various courses e.g Beauty Therapy, IT/Business, childcare, Nursing and Healthcare.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT

The local Active Retirement’s trip to Wales in June next is now fully booked and our thanks to all who booked so promptly. A Waiting List is now being taken as some cancellati­ons may occur before the final date.

We are very pleased that there has been such a positive interest in our ‘Irish Hour’ on Thursday afternoons at 3 p.m. in Teach Laighne – beidh failte romhat bheith linn are aon Diardaoin.

Our Book Club meets on the final Wednesday of each month at 3.30 p.m. in Teach Laighne and our choice for this month is by an Irish author – ‘The Woman At 72 Derry Lane’ by Carmel Harrington – new readers are always welcome. Our thanks are due to the local library staff for facilitati­ng us with books and venue.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family, brothers, sisters and friends of Margaret Gormally RIP for their recent sad loss. Margaret was one of our enthusiast­ic, talented members, shared her time and talents willingly with us and had just been elected as secretery of our group when her illness was diagnosed. Her cheerful presence will be much missed by all of us. Ar dheis De go mbeidh a hanam dilis.

LIBRARY EVENTS

Some of the upcoming events in the Tubbercurr­y Library include: Story time for under-sixes every Friday at 2 p.m. Board games every Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for over-10s at. If you can’t play we can teach you.

Special exhibition – Complement­ing the Western Drama Festival celebratio­n of 75 years in existence, a special exhibition ‘Celebratin­g Creativity in our Community’ will be held-in partnershi­p with Tubbercurr­y Community Library from March 6 to March 10 2018. All art forms are acceptable i.e. Painting, sketching, sculpture, photograph­y etc. The working title for this exhibition is ‘ Next Chapter’.

DRAMA GROUP

Skreen-Dromard Drama Group are taking to the stage in the Art Deco Theatre, Ballymote on February 17 at 8 p.m. with their Hilarious comedy ‘For Better, For Worse’ by the renowned playwright, Jimmy Keary. Doors open at 7.30 p.m.

The Proceeds of the raffle on the night will be given to Cancer Care Tubbercurr­y. Your support would be appreciate­d.
