Longford game is must win

-

SLIGO manager Cathal Corey gave his reaction after Sunday’s game and said he thought his side competed well.

“I thought the boys gave a performance and we were unlucky two or three chances bounced off the cross bar and goals that would have put us in front.

“Westmeath were good they just got their running game going well. We struggled dealing with their runners coming through and we let their first scores all come from well inside the 45. In the second half we got ourselves back in the game. Pat Hughes had a chance that just didn’t work for him, Niall had a chance, Kyle had a chance and we had chances to get back but now it’s two points we would have loved to have on the board but we just have to go again now.”

The Tyrone man said: “We had a chance to go in front but they were clinical today. Any time they got a sniff at all they scored some great points from distance as well. They used the wind better in the second half than maybe we used it.

“I thought the performance level was good. I thought our workrate was good just felt we didn’t get that wee bit of luck that you need too.

“We haven’t conceded any goals these last two games and that’s a big thing, you know we conceded a lot of goals earlier on in the FBD and the start of the league and now we have two clean sheets there so we’re happy with that end of it. We just need to start getting them at the other end.

“As the games go on now and tick off we need to get points from somewhere. We never thought we would get promotion or relegation. We just knew it was a stage where we had a lot of transition and bringing a lot of players into the team and we definitely don’t want to be relegated and we’re not thinking that way yet we just want to get two more points. Adrian was going really well and we were unlucky to lose him at that stage of the game and we had to play the whole second half without him. I thought Pat came in and won ball for us but we just didn’t get the scores from it. We just couldn’t get that bounce.”

Looking to Longford, he said he’s hoping to get it over the line. “We’re over the half of the league and we need to get points on the board. Every game we go to is one we need to win.” He said they will know more about Marren’s injury and availability in the coming days. He praised Aidan Rooney who recently left his backroom team. “Unfortunately Aidan Rooney who has been brilliant and so well organised, great man around the place, 24/7 commitment has moved on and I’m sure we’ll see Aidan managing county teams again. He is a county manager and he is a brilliant way with football. I wish him all the best,” he added.
