Cornview and Foleys Bar in thrilling draw

-

BOTH divisions in the Sligo Rovers Astro League are going right down to the wire, as the business end of the season is in full swing. In the Premier Division, there are just two points separating the top two, while in the Championship Division there are only three points separating the top three.

Foleys Bar and Cornview, the top two in the Premier Division played out a hugely entertaining 3-3 draw on Monday last in the Sean Fallon Centre. The game was end to end and indeed could have gone either way. Goalscorers on the night for the league leaders Cornview were Barry Leonard and a brace from the league’s top goal scorer Gareth Kelly. Foleys Bar who were leading 3-2 with five minutes left could not hang on to what would have been an invaluable three points despite a hat trick from man-of-the-match John Harvey. There was somewhat of a surprise on Tuesday, as third place Forrest Celtic were emphatically beaten 3-0 by GSS. This result all but ends any title hopes for Forrest, who had enjoyed a highly impressive campaign to date. A brace from Mick Kelly and a goal from Brendan Lowry secured the three points for GSS, who jumped up to fourth in the league standings as a result. Wednesday provided a double header of fixtures in the Championship Division, with the top four all in action. Calry continued their impressive recent run of form by comfortably seeing off the challenge on Ballymote 4-1. Goals on the night were from Ronan O’ Hara, Darren O’Hara, Keith Lynch and Mark Fowley. Mick Rafferty got a consolation goal for Ballymote. The result sent Calry up to third in the league standings, their highest placing so far this season. Inter Inferno pulled of the result of the week by defeating title favourites Sally Gardens 2-1. Goals from Gerry Moore and Niall Bambrick were enough to collect a hugely important three points, which sent them top of the league, three clear albeit with a game extra played. Noel McKenna got on the score sheet for Sallys who will be keen to put this defeat behind them. This Weeks fixtures are as follows: Tuesday at 9pm Cornview Celtic vs Bourbon Bar; Wednesday at 8pm Sally Gardens vs White Gorillas; Wednesday at 9pm GSS vs Foleys Bar; Friday at 8pm Bald Eagles vs Forrest Celtic; Friday at 9pm Ballymote vs. Strand Celtic.
