CORBALLA NS

Friday, February 9, saw the official opening of a new classroom at Corballa National School in west Sligo. Bishop of Killala, John Fleming was joined by a large crowd of parents, children, staff, past-pupils and friends of the school as he cut the ribbon and blessed this wonderful new facility.

It was a jubilant occasion as the school community celebrated the addition of a state-of-the-art classroom, purpose built for early years education. The new room has a dedicated story-time area with soft flooring, a wet play area, storage units accessible to young children and a 70 inch interactive panel which is height adjustable for use by teachers and children.

Rising enrolment at Corballa NS meant there was a requirement for a fifth mainstream classroom and this investment was granted by the Department of Education along with additional funds for a new heating system throughout the school.

The classroom was built by Hallquar construction between September and January. Having a fifth teacher allows the school offer small class sizes to Infants, who are taught on their own. Children therefore receive great individual attention in this modern, well-equipped classroom.

The opening ceremony featured poems and song from children of all ages as well as traditional music from the mixedage music group. Senior children reflected on the history of the school since 1845 and also presented the trophy for the 5/6/7 teacher boys’ Gaelic football competition which Corballa NS won last June.

The event would not have been possible without a great deal of work from staff, children, parents who sent in delicious cakes and the school’s parents’ association who ensured all the guests were well looked after. The board of management would like to express their appreciation to all involved in the official opening and look forward to many years learning and friendship in the brand new Infants’ classroom.

AMATEUR DRAMATIC SOCIETY

‘Drastic Action’ a 2018 production by the Castleconnor Amateur Dramatic Society Location: Castleconnor Community Centre. Dates: Ninth March 11 Time: 8 p.m. each evening Ticket Price: €10

A new three-act comedy written by Tom Tuffy, a member of the Castleconnor Amateur Dramatic Society is set in the fictional village of Rathcashel and promises to have action, laughs, ups and downs and the hint of romance.

With weekly updates on the events unfolding in ‘Rathcashel’ to be found on the ‘Castleconnor Amateur Dramatic Society’ Facebook page, curiosity among the local communities is gaining momentum and a great turnout in support of the all involved is expected on the dates.

Set in the quiet sleepy village of Rathcashel in rural Ireland, the local garda Station is renowned for its lack of action, or so it seems. Visitors to Rathcashel Garda Station are met by a friendly force of Guards, who may have ‘possibly’ bent a few rules in their time but of course never broke them. On the other hand, the few visitors to the station probably bent twisted and broke most of them. When word reaches the Sergeant that a visit from a review committee seeking station closures is scheduled, a plan is hatched to ensure they all look busy. What unfold are events that even the four Guards couldn’t have foreseen especially when they weren’t even involved in the planning.

Doors open at 7.30 p.m. with curtains up for 8.30 p.m. each evening For further information contact Tom Tuffy at 086 8134096 or email tomtuffy@yahoo.ie.
