ELEMENTS

Hamilton Gallery’s 2018 exhibition programme is about to get underway on Thursday 1st March at 6pm with ‘Elements’ an exhibition of seascapes and landscapes by local artist Póilín Mc Gowan.

About Elements

Imagine yourself standing on the edge of nature. Imagine the Sea roaring at you in its own right. Imagine the feeling of icy water touching your skin, the tingle of your very soul. Imagine standing in a landscape of dark browns, yellows, the coldness seeping and attaching itself to your very being. Loneliness with companionship, a meeting of connectivity.

The elements are surrounding you, holding you in their Power and releasing you… to fly.

Inspired by her surroundings within the regions of North Sligo, Póilín Mc Gowan captures the very essence of these ELEMENTS and brings them to you in her paintings. Póilín Mc Gowan, 2018

This is the first time Póilín has exhibited with the Hamilton Gallery.

BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE PENSIONER

Top Irish stand-up Neil Delamere brings Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Pensioner to The Hawkswell Theatre on 23rd March. The intriguingly-titled Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Pensioner represents a somewhat new approach by the Offaly funnyman. The show is framed around a single narrative – a day earlier this year when Delamere helped his 82-year-old father deliver the local mealson-wheels to the elderly, which they had to finish in time for a horse race. While hilariously describing the experience, and the various characters they meet on their outing, Delamere deviates with some uproarious side-stories before bringing everything together in a rewarding finale.

While not an official tribune to his father, ‘Butch Cassidy’ is underpinned by the close father and son relationship. There’s even some recorded comments from Mr. Delamere Senior who, interestingly, has yet to see the show. “He’ ll see it when I play Tullamore”, commented the Edenderry native.

AUDI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The Audi Dublin International Film Festival is on tour, bringing the perfect film to mark 100 years since Irish women got the vote to Sligo! A special screening of Petra Volpe’s The Divine Order will take place in The Model on 1st March at 8.00pm in association with access>CIN- EMA and with the support of the Arts Council.

The Divine Order is a heartwarming and funny drama about the fight for votes for women in Switzerland in 1971. It follows unassuming housewife Nora who makes a stand for change in a quiet village and runs up against some resistance. It’s a timely, character-driven story that shows the political is always the personal. The event will also feature a screening Newport Gun Girls, Lauren Orme’s animated short about women who worked at a gun-producing factory in Wales during WWII.

Other festival highlights include Immersive Stories, an innovative Virtual Reality conference and exhibition with several special guests including Resh Sidhu. Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave, who makes her directorial debut with documentary about the refugee crisis Sea Sorrow, comes to Dublin to receive the Volta Award, the festival’s most prestigious award. Also receiving the Volta Award is screenwriter and director Paul Schrader who is this year’s guest curator. Schrader will give a Public Talk, introduce three films that influenced his work and attend a screening of his new film First Reformed. ADIFF have also partnered with the San Francisco Silent Film Festival this year to screen two restorations of silent films, The Italian Straw Hat and Behind The Door, with live musical accompaniments.

PRIVATE PEACEFUL

On Thursday the 8th of March, a thought-provoking piece of theatre comes to the Hawk’s Well stage. Following on from the worldwide success of Michael Morpurgo’s best-selling book, film and stage play, War Horse, Simon Reade adapts and directs a stage version of another of Morpurgo’s award-winning books, Private Peaceful - a timely reminder of the heroic sacrifices that were made by those involved in World War 1. The story charts the life of a young soldier, Tommo Peaceful, a private played by Shane O’Regan who faces the firing squad for cowardice. The play highlights the dreadful horrors of war while celebrating the joyfulness of life, both which are clearly bound together in this not-to-missed, magnificent one-man theatre production.

Tickets for this event are €16/14 concession with a special rate of €8 for under 18s. An additional €1 Renovation Fee will also be added to all ticket which are available from the Hawk’s Well Theatre Box Office on 071 916 1518 or www. hawkswell.com.
