French students create new environmental group for Sligo on Facebook

-

TWO French sisters, Emma and Maurane Bettin, who are studying the BB in Marketing at the IT Sligo, have launched a new environmental network through Facebook, said to be the first of its kind in Sligo. Sligo Environmental Network is linked to the Irish Environmental Network, which is made up of 30 nationally active Irish Environmental NGOs. These groups represent a broad range of environmental issues including everything from wildlife conservation to climate change. The purpose of this project is to gather people who have an environmental interest and are from Sligo and its surroundings. Their missions are to engage people within communities to make a difference on the ground, while providing knowledge and experience to make further change on governmental level and to create a city that provides a healthy environ- ment for humans, plants and animals, contains a vibrant eco-system, and that will guide and inspire other areas in Ireland. The students are doing this volunteering project as they follow a volunteerism module, delivered by Ms. Joanna Sweeney, lecturer at IT Sligo. Emma said, “the main role of this network is to bring people together and let them feel that they can change something at their level, by providing a platform where they can express themselves, share and act”. In the future, this network aims to be the main environmental network of the City of Sligo where people will freely share events, post volunteer opportunities which are available in Sligo, asking and receiving advice on environmental matters all providing a platform for individuals passionate about Environmental issues.
