New speed signs go up in estates

-

THE implementation of new 30km speed limits in residential estates in Sligo has been welcomed by Sinn Féin Councillor Thomas Healy as a “life saving measure”.

“I have been campaigning for a statutory speed limit for residential estates over a period of years through the Jake’s Law group.

“Rosaleen Brennan has been campaigning for a mandatory speed limit in residential areas since her six year old son Jake died after he was knocked down by a car close to his home in June 2014. Sinn Féin has supported this campaign at national and local level and I had a motion in support of it adopted by Sligo County Council.

“Currently signage is being erected throughout Sligo town and County residential estates following the adoption of bye laws introducing a 30km speed limit, the signs also alert drivers to the presence of children playing and pedestrians.

“This is potentially a life saving measure and I am calling on all motorists to adhere to the new speed limits.

“There is presently a discrepancy with estates that have not yet been taken over by the Council and I will seek to address this concern to ensure equal safety measures for all citizens.”
