Diabetes centre ‘a priority’

-

A new diabetes centre at Sligo University Hospital could be the first project as part of Project Ireland 2040 in the region. A recent meeting took place between representatives of Diabetes Ireland and the four local TDs to discuss concerns over the delivery of a new Diabetes Centre. The 277m2 €500,000 centre was announced in 2015 and Planning Permission was received in December 2016. The project was sent to tender in 2017 and the tenders process was completed in February 2018. This project is ready to go with the appointment of a contractor only dependent on Capital Funding approval. Should the Department of Health make the Capital Funding available to Sligo University Hospital this project could be on site by July 2018 and open for the Diabetes Community in the Northwest by Spring 2019. Approximately 500 patients attending Diabetes clinics in Sligo University Hospital of whom about 75 are children.
