Manager happy with overall performance as few gave Sligo much hope against Longford

-

SLIGO manager Cathal Corey said he was happy with the performance against Longford although they had a very slow start.

He said: “We started slow and looked all over the place for the first ten or 15 minutes but we picked up the pace then and got going and we started to get our scores. We kicked 8 in a row and we were playing really well.

“We came out in the second half and started well and I thought Stephen Coen was taken down here for at least a penalty if not a free and from that they went up the field and got a goal and we struggled a bit then with our own kick-outs and they kind of turned it a bit.

“But you’re always going to get a patch and they got the goal and I thought we showed great character then. We got working again, we got a couple of tight scores and we missed a few chances but overall the point was a good result for us.

“Longford is a good side a seasoned team and you know everybody was favouring them to win here today and we’re happy. We could have won the game, should have won the game but we’re happy with the point.

“It was a good performance, I’m happy with a lot of what we did well and we’ve plenty to work on.”

Regarding the last two games with Offaly away and home to Derry the Tyrone man said Sligo really have to get something from both of these.

“Longford was a game that we weren’t given a chance on or to get anything out of at all so it’s great to get the point.

“We played well enough to win it but we’re happy to get something.

“If we had played that well and got nothing out of it then that would have been totally disappointing and the dressing room would have been totally different going into next week.

“It’s just a wee spring of confidence there that we did play Longford well.”

Cathal said the backroom team is working well and the players are working hard too. “We still have loads to do and lots to tidy up and improve on but everybody is training hard and that’s what important.

“What I saw today definitely when we got our game going and started to look up and got the right men on the ball I thought some of our play was brilliant, some of our hands were brilliant and our scores were good.

“It’s just about keeping that going for longer periods and know we were far enough in front to win a game and shouldn’t have let them back but we let them back and we’ll have to look at that but to concede two goals in the second half is bad.

“Adrian did well when he came in and won a big ball at the end and kicked us a free and had a couple more chances too that he would get,” the manager added.
