CONGRATS PÁDRAIG

Once again we congratulate Pádraig Maye, Aclare, who recently won four all-Ireland Indoor medals at Athletics in Athlone. This brings his total number to 151 all-Ireland medals. Incidentally, the first medal he won was as a member of the St Nathy’s College Senior team, who won the all-Ireland College Football on Palm Sunday in 1957. It is actually 61 years ago this Palm Sunday.

Pádraig was corner forward and at centre field was Eamon O’Hara, the captain, who hailed from Cloongoonagh – an uncle of young Eamon O’Hara, who has made a major contribution to football in county Sligo. The St Nathy’s win has been a historical victory considering that this was the only time in the College’s 200-year history that the Hogan Cup was in the custody of the college.

Mind you, the famous three in a row was obtainable back then, as having won in 1957, they then lost to Jarlath’s in 1958 (four points to 2), Jarlath’s went on to win that year and then in 1959, they were beaten by St Joseph’s, Fairview in the all-Ireland Final by four points, after a dramatic incident decided the game, i.e. they missed a penalty midway in the second half at a time when they were three points up. Again, well done, Pádraig, and may you continue to add to this collection of medals.

Sympathy is extended on the recent death of Dan Tuohy, Kincullew, Aclare, to his family, neighbours and friends. May his soul rest in peace.
