Dancing poetry at Cos Cos fest

-

‘ TRADITIONAL music innovators’ will come together as Cos Cos presents the world premier of a very special performance of rhythm conversations between voice, fiddle, and traditional dance, on May 12 th in St. Columba’s Church, Drumcliffe, the final resting place of Sligo’s greatest poet.

Featuring Lorcán Mac Mathúna and Daire Bracken, and Sean Nós dancers, Liam Scanlonn and Caoimhe Ní Mhaolagáín, Preab Meadar, will see an exciting exploration of the rhythms of medieval Gaelic poetry, through music and dance.

In this production they will reveal the masterful rhythm of a 16 th century Sligo poet, Tadgh Dall Ó hUiggín with musical compositions that have been described as ‘ground-breaking’ and ‘an extraordinary meeting of word-craft and music rhythms.’

Based on Lorcán and Daire’s ground-breaking newly composed suite of dance-songs, in unprecedented time signatures; this work will see a unique combination and performance of vocal and instrumental tradition, and dance.

Preab Meadar is a musical suite of newly defined tune rhythms created by Lorcán Mac Mathúna and Daire Bracken based on the meters of syllabic poetry from a medieval Gaelic tradition known as the Dán Díreach.

It features dance songs and new tune typologies which the duo have added to the traditional palette.

In this project, the composers have taken Preab Meadar a step further and have joined with Sean-Nós dancers to devise new steps suited to the rhythms of these tune typologies.

Their unique new steps will be revealed in a world premier at the Cos Cos Sean-Nós dance festival in Sligo on May 12 th 2018.

Preab Meadar will bring the work of 16 th C. Sligo poet, Tadgh Dall O hUiggín, home to Sligo. In the church where one of Ireland’s greatest modern poets is buried, it is fitting that the lyrics of an ancient and forgotten poetic tradition are brought to life for a contemporary audience.

Preab Meadar will perform at the Cos Cos Sean Nós dance festival in Drumcliffe on May 12 th 2018, at St Columba’s Church, Drumcliffe.
