The Sligo Champion

Sligo/Leitrim squad announced for Super Cup

- BY JESSICA FARRY

With momentum building ahead of this year’s Sligo Super Cup, the 16-strong squad to represent Sligo/Leitrim at the prestigious competition has been named.

Eleven clubs from throughout the region are represented in the local squad, which will be captained by Real Tubber’s Kyle McDonagh.

The Sligo/Leitrim team joins top academies such as Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town, Chesterfield, Glenavon, Dublin District Schoolboys League and the Mayo League in the elite under-12 tournament which takes place at Sligo Showgrounds from May 4th-6th.

Over the past six months, 22 talented young players have taken part in 40 training/match day sessions, leaving their coaches with the unenviable task of reducing the final squad to 16 players.

“There were many difficult and close decisions to make,” explains coach, Packie Lynch.

“Unfortunately, six lads will be disappointed on this occasion but, hopefully, their chance will come at a later stage in their development.

“The lads are really excited and looking forward to competing against elite players from across Ireland and the UK, and we are sure they will give a very good account of themselves.”

Meanwhile, the draw to decide who plays who in the group stages of the competition takes place at a gala launch hosted by Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Clr.Seamus Kilgannon, at County Hall this Thursday evening.

The event, which will be attended by Sligo Rovers manager, Gerard Lyttle and some of his players, as well as sponsors, players and parents, will be recorded by Ocean FM for broadcast on Friday evening at 6pm.
