Surf Centre delays

-

Councillors will have to wait until June to learn more about “blockages” to the new Surfing and community centre in Strandhill.

The April meeting of Sligo County Council discussed developments regarding the proposed surfing and community centre in the village.

It was due to a motion tabled by Chris MacManus asking for a progress report on the development.

Cllr MacManus said: “Strandhill has no community centre facility and I have been contacted by concerned people who fear the project has stalled. They still believe it is in the pipeline, but the council can’t stand back; it needs to show leadership.”

Cllr MacManus called on Council Chief Executive Ciarán Hayes in his role as Chair of Sligo Tourism to try and get the project moving once more.

In response, Mr Hayes said there were “a number of different moving parts and groups” involved in the project.

Mr Hayes said he attended a meeting recently, where the local development group reaffirmed their commitment to the project.

“Engagements are currently ongoing, and that will hopefully free up blockages that are there at the moment. We will continue to take a leadership role.” Mr Hayes said.

A further update will be given at the County Council’s June meeting.

London architects Manalo & White won the competition to design the centre to be run by the Strandhill Community Maritime Co Ltd.
