Gallant Sligo girls beaten by Mayo

was Sligo who went into an early lead with a well taken point from Tara Casserly.

This was followed by a point from Maeve Casserly and then Tara scored a second point leaving the Sligo supporters enthused. However,

Mayo soon found their form with four points in quick succes- sion from Sinead Walshe, Sorcha McCarney, Milly Sheridan and a 2nd from Walshe.

Clara Barrett was in superb goal scoring form, netting two before half time, followed by a further Walshe point, one from Lilian Keane and a second by McCarney, replied to by Sligo’s Nadine Hargadon to leave the half time score Mayo 2-7: Sligo 0-4.

Sligo made a good effort to regain momentum in the second half with a Maeve Casserly goal and a point from Claudia Gonley. Mayo matched every score and more with Barrett scoring her third goal and two Ava McGahan points closely followed by two more from top taliswoman Sinead Walshe.

Sligo will rue three goal chances at this stage after the sin binning of Cushla Ruane.

Both teams were quite physical throughout.

Gonley went on to scored two well finished goals and M Casserly raised Sligo’s score to 3-6.

A further Mayo goal from Grainne Phillips and three points including a long range one from Danielle Brennan brought the eventual victors to 4-14 and put the game out of Sligo’s reach.

At this point, both sides emptied their benches and fresh legs displayed some great play before the final whistle from referee John Devlin.
