The Sligo Champion

New regatta season is underway

-

SLIGO Rowing Club competed at magnificent Lough Rynn to take part in the club’s last head of the season before entering the regatta season in earnest.

Sligo had a full trailer of boats travelling with crews entered in several categories. A crew from the club’s recently started Leisure Rowing initiative also travelled to Lough Rynn to race the 5km course. There were many fine displays on the day including that of the leisure rowers but it was the talented double of Brian Colsh and David Barlow who took home the silverware on this occasion winning outright the Junior 16 Mens Double cat- egory. These are definitely crew to watch for the future.

Glenn Patterson continues to raise the bar also taking home his winner’s medal winning the Intermediate Single sculls.

The club then travelled to Islandbridge Dublin to compete on the Liffey at the Commercial Regatta where the club’s women’s junior 16 coxed quad expertly stoked by Sarah Tighe put in a brave performance.

This time Brian Colsh was racing in the Junior 16 single sculls and after winning his heat, quarter final and semi-final was just narrowly beaten on the line in the final after an arduous gruelling day’s racing.

Glenn Patterson brought home the silverware for Sligo on this occasion winning once again the intermediate single sculls category. The club now looks forward to the pending arrival of its recently purchased second leisure boat.

The quad boat to be called the Annacoona will help facilitate the increased interest in leisure rowing which the club is now experiencing.

An open day will be scheduled for May upon the boat’s delivery.
