LONDON SLIGO 1-9 3-15

SLIGO Masters and London kicked off the new season in beautiful conditions in Tir Chonall Gaels pitch last Saturday.

Last year’s beaten finalists were fast out of the blocks and had four points on the board before a well-taken Aidan Dillane goal brought the home side back in it. Sligo controlled proceedings to lead at half-time by 1-08 to 1-1,

Dessie Sloyan notching the goal and Paul Durcan with the pick of the points. Eamon Cawley, Declan Cawley, Paul Taylor, and Sean Davey also weighed in with points. A well-worked goal from debutant Sean Davey, and a right-footed Sloyan goal saw Sligo comfortable at the end as they won out by 3-15 to 1-09.

Sean Davey, Colin Gordon, Eamonn Cawley and Mark Cosgrove all contributed handsomely on their debuts. London never really recovered from their slow start, but they played some good football in patches with Chris Byrne, selector with London seniors, and Aidan Dillane always threatening. Next up is Kildare on Saturday May 26th. The Sligo panel would like to extend a huge thank you to London Masters and David Igoe, a man with strong Castleconnor connections, in particular for their hospitality. From the bus to the airport to the food in Mcgoverns, Willesden after to the craic in the Claddagh Ring, everyone had a mighty weekend topped off by the fine performance of the seniors on Sunday.

Sligo Team: Gerry Dooner; Mark Boland, David Killoran, Damien Kelly; Morgan McCormack, David Durkin (c), Mark Cosgrove; Con O’Meara, Nigel Clancy; Sean Davey, Paul Taylor, Declan Cawley; Dessie Sloyan, Fergal Kelly, Eamonn Cawley.
