CALRY/ST JOSEPH’S ST JOHN’S 1-8 0-7

CALRY/ST Joseph’s faced off against St John’s in The Belfry Senior League at Scarden on Saturday evening last.

The “prequel” for the upcoming Championship fixture between the two sides was a dour affair spoiled by its “stop-start” nature.

There were 10 minutes played before Paddy Wolfe got the first score of the game out wide on the left following good build up play from Darragh Cummins and Conor Griffin.

The home side took a 3 point lead through the boot of Conor Griffin with an excellent score following a superb move orchestrated by Damien O’Boyle.

Calry were beginning to dominate at this point but when Bryan McGovern was clean through and the goal at his mercy, he blazed high and wide.

This seemed to ignite the St John’s flame and they bounced back with 3 unanswered points, the first of which came on 23 minutes from a free and leave the sides level at the break 3 points apiece with Tommy Kelly chipping in also.

Charlie Harrison was proving to be a right handful for the Calry side with his constant probing runs from deep.

Indeed it was one such run that lead to the opening score of the second half when Shane Stenson put St John’s ahead for the first time on 35 minutes.

Darragh Cummins equalised again following a move which involved Griffin, Wolfe and Bryan McGovern.

Darragh Cummins exchanged scores with David Rooney and at this point, Calry were the bare minimum ahead, 06-05.

An excellent catch by the St John’s midfield fed Tommy Kelly and he finished with a good score to level it up again.

That proved to be St John’s last score from play and when Paddy Wolfe goaled, backed up with two points from Darragh Cummins, it was game over for St John’s who did put over two late frees to leave the final score, Calry/St Joseph’s 1-08 St Johns 0-07.

Tempers flared up in the final minutes and St Johns sub McNicholas received a straight red card with Adrian Cummins getting a 2nd yellow to also leave the field.

Best for Calry/St Joseph’s was Darragh Cummins.

Best for St John’s was Charlie Harrison.
