SOUTH Sligo is alive with athletes as the club’s young talent in the region sweeps up at the recent County Relay finals.
South Sligo AC is fast becoming the place to be if you’re a junior athlete, the club now has over 200 junior members ranging in ages from 6 years to 18 years.
The junior club is lead under the stewardship of junior chairman Paul Walsh and his team of coaches which are lead by head Coach Dermott McDermott,
Dermott has assisted in breathing new life into this up and coming club.
At the County Relay finals, the weekend started with 19 relay teams from U9s up to U14s taking to the track at IT Sligo.
Friday night started well for South Sligo AC with the U9 girls getting off to a flying start and bringing home the first Gold of the evening.
This was quickly followed by the U9 boys who also took Gold, however it didn’t stop there.
The U10 girls had super race to take the Gold and the U10 boys followed in quick succession to also take Gold. SSAC were surely on form and it continued for the sea of yellow with the U11 girls taking the Silver and the U11 boys holding on for the Bronze.
Two of the U12 girls teams fought on to take medals in Gold and Bronze with the U12 boys showing a fine display to also take Gold. The 2 U13 girls were not to be left out and the also Gold and Bronze. With the u14 girls finishing the night as SSAC had started with a Gold.
All the athletes displayed a fine performance, however the more senior of our Junior Athletes were not going to be left behind and club superstar Ellen Kilcoyne who recently took a medal at the National Indoor Finals over the 60m, kicked off her season in Vernon in France making her SPN Vernon debut.
Ellen left no one in doubt when the gun went off, she was there to compete and that she did, as she stormed home to take the Silver medal in the 100m. Ellen also kicked off her long jump season in SPN Vernon and she is certainly one to watch over the coming months. She also received the female athlete of the year award from St Attracta’s Community School.
