WATER BOIL NOTICE

Representatives from Irish Water held a meeting recently with all the public representatives from Sligo County Council and also with a number of Community Representatives. They gave an in-depth description of the ongoing problems associated with the water supply from Lough Talt. In a nutshell the boil water notice is set to continue into the immediate future with no sign yet of it being lifted.

Many representatives were totally unaware of how basic the treatment plant at Lough Talt actually is, and indeed it is probably incorrect to use the name ‘treatment plant’ at all. The water coming from the lake goes through a basic system where the water is chlorinated, but it is not put through any filtering system as is the norm in other more modern facilities.

Evidence of Cryptosporidium continues in the water as this is the danger season for this contamination and the public should check the Irish Water website on a regular basis for further updates.

However, households should definitely continue to boil water and leave to cool before drinking.

REFERENDUM

Canvassing and discussions are taking place locally on the upcoming referendum to remove or not remove the Eight Amendment from the Constitution. Word locally is that the vote will be tight.

A sad complaint locally is that posters have been removed by opponents of the other opinion. Respect for all opinions should be tolerated by all sides.
