Sligo farmer recognised for dairy farming excellence at the 11th annual Aurivo Milk Quality Awards
MATTHEW Burke from Killavil, Ballymote has been acknowledged for his contribution to dairy farming excellence at the Aurivo Milk Quality Awards.
Now in their 11 th year, the awards recognise the standard of excellence in dairy farming by Aurivo milk suppliers, as well as their dedication and commitment to milk production in the previous year. Prizes were awarded at a special ceremony at the Radisson Hotel Sligo on May 9 th.
Matthew received the award for Lowest Annual Average SCC.
Matthew, who took over the family farm in 1996, milks 55 Holstein/Friesian cows on 32 hectares. His parents, Matt Senior and Kathleen, remain very active on the farm to this day and his wife Annette also helps out when required.
100% of calving is done in spring, with a drying off period of just 6 weeks in winter.
To maintain the highest standards of quality, Matthew tests and services his milking machines at the beginning of every year, keeps a regular milking routine and organises regular cleaning of yards, cubicles, milking equipment and tanks.
