Vote was ‘a moment of profound change’
WELCOMING the referendum result ‘Sligo Together For Yes’ spokesperson Mr Corey Whyte, said the resounding Yes vote was an historic victory for women’s rights and it demonstrated that Ireland today was a more caring and compassionate society that recognised the harm and terrible injustice that hasdbeen caused by the 8th amendment over the years.
“Over the last number of weeks and months, there has been an incredible movement of people advocating for a “Yes” vote to ensure that we have a more equal, more compassionate and more caring society.”
“Through our grassroots campaign and through the hard work and perseverance of many volunteers and with the support of the people of this community, a historic victory has been achieved.”
“The 8th amendment failed Irish women for the past 35 years. It did not prevent abortions.
“Instead Ireland “exported” our problems. Tens of thousands of Irish women were compelled to flee our shores for terminations and medical care.
“The 8th amendment has been unique in the cruelty it created.
“Over the terrible 35 years of its existence the Irish people have been subjected to a long list of cases detailing the horrors of those women directly affected by it.
“The “Yes” result now offers an opportunity for a compassionate and supportive environment for our daughters, wives, mothers, sisters, aunts and nieces.
“This will be recorded as a moment of profound change in Ireland’s social history, a moment when the nation collectively stood up for women and for their healthcare.
“This has been a resounding vote for decency and dignity and for women’s rights.” said Mr Whyte.
